Following a productive initial exchange in October, we invite you to a second evening event, where we aim to advance networking and positioning within the independent scene regarding the Baakenhafen opera plans. Although politicians have been pushing ahead with the opera plans behind closed doors and at breakneck speed for some time now, and positions are under pressure, we want to take another evening to pause and discuss what position or positions the independent scene itself actually takes on this project.
The focus is on questions about our future: musical theater beyond fixed categories, between stage, sound space, and social resonance space. We look at the role of Baakenhafen as an important historical and urban location. And we ask how the independent scene, with its diversity, willingness to experiment, and innovative power, can be integrated into a new opera architecture despite scarce resources: What added value does the Baakenhafen Opera project bring to institutions, the city, and Hamburg audiences? And last but not least, the question - what will happen to the old opera building and what role could the independent scene play here?
After kicking off the discussion with input and keynote speeches at our event in October, we now want to further discuss and refine our position(s). The medium-term goal is to produce a joint paper setting out a vision of what the new opera house in Baakenhafen would need in order to be relevant for independent performing arts music theater.
Everyone who is involved in musical theater, wants to get involved, or is curious about this vibrant art form is invited. An evening to discuss, listen, and reflect. An attempt to shape culture in Hamburg together.
